Week 9 Personal Blogging

How personal you are on your blog depends on the purpose of your blog. If it's a blog about your business then posts should be more professional with only a little bit of personality. For example, If I was giving my opinion about a product I was selling than that would be the personal part of it. If your blog is more about yourself or a non business topic than adding more personality makes sense.

On the other hand, it also depends on what your readers and\or customers want.  If they give you feedback that they want a more personal touch on your blog than that's what you should give them.  You may also share too much on your blog and readers may ask you to not be so open. The key is to know your readers and customers and finding the right balance.

  1. Chris, Well said. I think that in the end you need to be able to judge what your audience wants. Then you need to be able to balance keeping it unique to you and interesting to them.

  3. You definitely have to consider your audience. If you write a political rant blog, your readers expect not only lots of opinions, but probably a vitriolic tone, as well. That might not be appropriate for a recipe blog.

Still, the nature of the blog is a personal forum. Even if you're writing a purely factual blog, your personality should come through. I know a guy who writes a blog about independent filmmaking and although it's loaded with very authoritative information about financing and distribution and such, his personality still comes through.

    1. I agree with you on this Angela... I feel like knowing your audience is key to how you blog. You can be very professional and still let your personality shine through. Personality is is very important in my opinion. It can make the difference from your blog looking boring and robotic to interesting and humanistic.

  4. I agree Chris. I used a family restaurant as an example of a blog that would work well to inject personality into. I suppose something like a travel blog would also mandate a certain amount of personality.

On the other hand, if I were an Edward Jones agent I would stick to financials on my blog and save the personality for in the office.

  5. I can agree with the whole balance thing. Its all about having the right touch and knowing off the bat what you will be talking about and even if it warrants being personal in the 1st place. If you plan to be like a travel agency for example, you can add a little bit of personality to it, especially if you have visited some of the places mentioned, though if your more of a financial type business or the related sort then you should create more of a professional look to your posts.

  6. I think you make a good point about knowing your readers and knowing what they want. If your audience is interested in your blog because of the personality then of course it would make sense to include it. Good point.
